School desegregation in western Kentucky oral history project, 2002.

This is a collection of interviews with teachers, students, politicians, firemen, preachers, and others who experienced the school integration of the 1950s and 1960s in various parts of western Kentucky (with some overlap into southwestern Indiana and northern Tennessee). Interviewees remember the last days of segregation and the early days of school integration. Topics covered include racial tensions, legal battles, the role of the NAACP, and teaching and learning in integrated schools. Many of the interviewees were some of the first black students to integrate western Kentucky high schools; some were parents who pushed for their children to attend integrated schools in the courts; others are white students who watched the process of integration; and still others are political activists who pushed for integration in the 1950s and 60s.
