General description of the collection: The Jerome Loewy papers contain a small bound diary describing his service in France during WWI. The diary is an almost daily log of his life from the day he boarded the transport Pocahontas on his way to Brest, France, until he returned to the US. Loewy talks about Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) dances that were held often. The YMCA also had places to sleep when he was on leave, shows for troops and helped operate the hospitals. He was frequently sent to Nantes for supplies such as iron, windows, bolts, rock, and other materials related to building. Several times he mentions sending money home, both times for the same amount, $89.13. He often swam and went on walks or bicycle rides with other officers along the shore or into various small villages in the region. Also, mentions the bombardment of Paris in early 1918 and the false rumors that went around in October that the Armistice had been signed. When it was signed on November 11th, the barracks went wild with parades and flags flying everywhere. Loewy went on leave twice while in France. He visited Verdun in May 1919 and Paris several times. He was always going out with the local French women and nurses from the nearby 101st Battalion Hospital. He once visited a German prisoner camp that was clean and well kept. The last several pages of the diary contain lists of letters that he wrote, received and needed to write.

Jerome Loewy was part of the United States Reserve. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on June 23, 1917 to the Engineer Corps. He was put on active duty July 18, 1917 and then sent to France on December 3, 1917. After service in and around Saint-Nazaire, France, near Nantes, he was returned to the States and discharged July 28, 1919. From the description of Jerome Loewy papers, 2005.
