Calk Family Collection, 1744-1978 (Bulk 1775-1920).

The Calk Family Collection consists of many different types of documents spanning from 1744-1978. The bulk of collection is business related documents of James, William, Thomas, Thomas, Jr., William, Jr., Price and other Calk family members. The business documents are legal papers, receipts, tax accounts and receipts, survey notes and land plats, and business correspondence. The collection also has personal correspondence to and from various Calk family members. The printed materials the collection has are newspapers and broadsides, sheet music and music books, periodicals and almanacs, war atlases, post cards, pamphlets, and souvenir books of Washington, D.C.A small portion of the collection was microfilmed by the University of Kentucky in 1932 and the print-back copies are included in this collection. Also included are photographs taken in the Fall 2002 of the Calk Family home in Montgomery County, Kentucky. The collection is housed in Fourteen (14) boxes, (7 c.f.), six (6) of the boxes are oversized.

William Calk was born in Prince William County, Virginia on March 7, 1740. When older, he managed his father's plantation. He married Sarah Catlett about 1763. She was born in 1755 and died on November 20, 1826. In 1765, he went to South Carolina and purchased land on the Dan River. He returned to his family in 1767.
