George Irving Christie was born in Winchester, Dundas County, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) in Guelph in 1902 before migrating to the United States for post-graduate training. He acquired a B.S.A. degree in Iowa in 1903 and his D.Sc. from the same university in 1925. Christie became secretary of the Indiana Corn Growers in 1906. In 1935 Max Robertson travelled from England to Papua New Guinea as part of a gold prospecting team led by Jack Hides. In 1936 he took a position as a schoolmaster in Sydney, and in 1937 joined the staff of 2CH, then joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney and Brisbane as an announcer and sports commentator. Clark was the son of Julia and Edward J. Clark, editor and printer of Grand Rapids, and the grandson of Merrills H. Clark, owner of the Grand Rapids Democrat. He was also the grandson of E.R.
