Collection of letters regarding Shorthorn dairy cattle, 1870-1872. 1870- 1872.

This collection of letters are all to the Hon. Samuel Campbell of New York Mills, N.Y., and relate to the buying and selling of Shorthorn dairy cattle in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Campbell, a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, was a partner in the extensive cotton mill of Walcott & Campbell. This firm acquired land that led them into becoming prominent cattle breeders and sellers in the United States for purebred Shorthorns, and for holding a famous cattle auction in 1873. The letters are from correspondents in London and Derby (Eng.), Beachville (Ont.), London (Ont.), Paris (Ont.) and Montreal. Some of the men were quite famous in the annals of Canadian Shorthorn breeders, such as Senator David Christie of Paris (a member of the Committee that selected the site of the OAC.) and Senator M.H. Cochrane of Compton, Que.
