John Raleigh Mott was born on May 25, 1865 in Livingston Manor, New York to John Stitt and Elmira Dodge Mott. John R. was the third of four children, having two older and one younger sister. The family soon moved to Postville, Iowa, where the elder Mott prospered as a retail lumber and hardware merchant and became mayor. Adrian Lyon was born in 1869 in Pluckemin, New Jersey. He was trained as a lawyer and served as city attorney for Perth Amboy, New Jersey and as judge in the Perth Amboy district court and the Common Pleas Court of Middlesex County. Lyon was active in organizing the Perth Amboy YMCA in 1912 and served as its president for almost 40 years.
