Peter Sis was born May 11, 1949, in Brno, Czech Republic. He immigrated to the United States in 1982 and became a citizen in 1989. He became an artist, animator, illustrator, stage designer, and writer. He has received many honors and awards for his work, including Caldecott Honors in 1997--for Starry Messenger: Galileo Galilei--and in 1999--for Tibet. After working as a magician and journalist, Albert Sidney Fleischman began writing successful adult novels and screenplays before trying children's and young adult fiction. His best known character is probably the Iowa farmer, McBroom, but Fleischman received the 1987 Newbery for "The Whipping Boy," a tale of mistaken identity, adventure and friendship among boys.
