After several preliminary attempts, the Young Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) was established in Spokane Falls, Washington Territory on November 4, 1884. William Markham was its first secretary. James Mills, Sr., traveled to California in 1883 and lived in Elsinore until the mid-1880s, when he moved to Riverside.
