John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an author, scholar, and educator. Born in South Africa, he was educated at Oxford, where he nourished a love of philology and myth. During a distinguished career as professor of English at Oxford, he provided renditions of Middle English poems such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Sir Orfeo.
