Franklyn Mansfield Branley was born in 1915 in New Rochelle, New York. He received his teaching license from New Patlz Normal School and his BA from New York University in 1942. He received his MA and Ed.D. from Columbia University in 1948 and 1957, respectively. He taught school from 1936-1954, one of the first teachers to teach science to elementary school children. Blair Lent was born January 22, 1930 in Boston Massachusetts. He graduated from the Museum of Fine Arts School of Art in 1953 and later studied art in Switzerland and Italy. In the 1950s, he worked as an assistant art director and creative designer and in the 1960s began illustrating and writing children's books.
