William Henry Seward was born in Florida, Orange County, New York, on May 16, 1801. He was the son of Samuel S. Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward. He graduated from Union College in 1820, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. In 1823, he moved to Auburn, New York, where he entered Judge Elijah Miller's law office. Irish-born immigrant to U.S. in 1854. Part owner of Chicago Post before the Civil War. Enlisted and mustered in as major in the 90th Illinois Infantry September 23, 1862. Married Margaret Cameron about November 1862 and she went with him to winter quarters. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel March 6, 1863, effective September 29, 1863, and to colonel November 25, 1863, but was never officially mustered as colonel. Mustered out June 6, 1865.
