Poet Elizabeth Bishop was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and had an often difficult childhood in Canada and New England. She wrote poetry in her youth, and developed as a writer at Vassar, where her friends included Mary McCarthy and Marianne Moore. In 1946 she published a book of poetry titled North and South, and travelled to Brazil, where she remained for fifteen years.
