Acquainted with him in Philadelphia in 1791; lately heard he was in Ste. Genevieve and St. Louis; sends this by Capt. [Meriwether] Lewis, his secretary; geography of the Missouri [River] and easiest water communication from it to Pacific is unknown; Capt. Lewis with 12 or 15 men is authorized to explore it; Spain agrees that France should issue passports, which have been received some time ago; now hears that France had ceded Louisiana to U.S.; is sure Peyroux will give Lewis all aid possible in so worthy an undertaking.
