Civil War diary, 1863 Jan. 1-Sept. 20.

Details of duties, weather, and travels between Buffalo, Washington, D.C., and Aqua Creek, Va. Bulk of diary was written while at Aqua Creek. Entry for 5 Apr. 1863 recalls Abraham Lincoln, Mrs. Lincoln, and their son arriving by boat at Aqua Creek and continuing by train to the front. After 14 May 1863, he is occupied with attempts to reorganize the 21st Regiment. He also was ordered to see Gen. Silas Casey to be examined for a position in the United States colored troops for which he was rejected on 27 August 1863.

Regiment organized at Elmira, N.Y., 20 May 1861, from the 65th and 74th Militia. Men were recruited principally from Erie County. The regiment left the state on 18 June 1861, and saw service in Maryland and Virginia, including McDowell's advance on Richmond, Pope's Campaign, Bull Run, and Antietam.
