George William Childs letters, 1857-1890.

The collection consists of six letters, including: to Dr. Isaac Hayes, 22 June 1857, about helping Dr. Elder write a book on the life of Dr. [Elisha Kent] Kane; to Dr. John W. Francis, 25 Jan. 1858, thanking him for the volume of the Proceedings of the N.B. Historical Society; to Dr. Hayes, 18 Sept. 1858, asking him to write an account of a spearhead he had brought back from his Alaskan Expedition, so that Childs may give the spearhead and description to Jas. T. Fields; to Mr. Leland, 18 July 1857, about the payment of royalties to Dr. Kane's estate for the book his firm published, including a laudatory clipping; to Mr. Phillips, 19 June 1874, concerning an unkind allusion to him in Friday's Herald, and wondering if the publishers, the Bennetts, had any unkind feeling toward him; to H.D. Beach, 6 June 1867, on Public Ledger letterhead, asking him to reconsider attending the opening of the new Ledger Building; to Mr. Pond, 22 April 1890, regretfully declining an invitation to breakfast with Max O'Rell.

George W. Childs (1829-1894) was the founder and editor of the Philadelphia Public Ledger and a noted philanthropist. Born in Baltimore, he moved to Philadelphia to work for a bookseller at age fourteen and soon went into business for himself at the age of eighteen. In 1849, he became a partner in the publishing firm of R. E. Petersen & Company, and in 1860 he formed a partnership with the influential publisher J. P. Lippincott.
