Richard C. Taylor writes to his cousin Richard Taylor, 1 Sept. 1831, about the difficulties he is having finding out the status of his cousin's land in Northampton County, Pa. near the Lehigh River. He transcribes three letters from John P. Griffith, attorney, in Philadelphia, about the difficulties in surveying the wild lands. Taylor isn't sure if there is coal under the land. He continues with news of his own activities, American politics, the workings of local courts, and family news. With integral envelope and red wax seal.

Richard C. Taylor (18 Jan. 1789-26 Oct. 1851), mineral surveyor and practical geologist, was born at Hinton in Suffolk, England. He emigrated to America in July 1830 with his wife and four children, settling in Philipsburg, Pa. The decision to emigrate may have been forced on him. Taylor was involved with the British Iron Company when it failed spectacularly in 1828; his cousin Philip Taylor fled into French exile, and Taylor accepted a mining post in the United States.
