The Rich Papers, 1616-1642, consists of letters, reports, bills, lists of share holders and supplies, notes, petitions and a report of grievances of the Bermuda colonists. Most of these papers were written to Sir Nathaniel Rich (ca. 1585-1686). Sir Nathaniel Rich and the Earl of Warwick sent their relative, Robert Rich, to the island as factor to oversee their land which was in Southampton and Warwick. Many of the letters of Robert Rich to his brother, Sir Nathaniel Rich, are in this collection. There is also a letter from Richard Norwood, the surveyor, and many from the early governors as well as the ministers who served the colony. The Norwood letter is not part of the Rich Papers, but is the property of Sir Henry Tucker. The Rich Papers form part of a larger collection known as the Manchester Papers. A copy of the sale catalog for the Rich Papers precedes the papers on the film. Note that not everything listed in the catalogue was purchased by Bermuda--only those papers relating to Bermuda. The papers are arranged in their original numerical sequence as printed in Historical Manuscripts Commission Series I, Report VIII Appendix (Part II) 1881. The only item on the film that relates to the Virginia Company is No. 279.
