James M. Sampson diary, 1863-1864.

Diary kept by 2nd Lt. James M. Sampson of Lakeville, Mass., 1 Jan 1863-4 July 1864 while serving in the 4th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in Louisana. The diary describes camp life, battle experiences, descriptions of weather, marching, drills, and his experience being taken prisoner. Also includes a cash account and a detailed list of 35 officers taken prisoner at Brashear, La., along with their ranks, units, and places of residence. Also, includes three printed infantry tactics books.
