Anonymous British orderly book, 1778-1779

Anonymous British orderly book kept at New York City, 7 Nov. 1778-5 Aug. 1779. Includes general and garrison orders from Henry Clinton, Commander-in-Chief, troop movements for raids on the Connecticut coast in March and July 1779, the capture of Stony Brook and Verplank's Point on the Hudson in June, and the raid on Poundridge (N.Y.) in July 1779. The orderly book also includes records of courts-martial, promotions of officers, duty assignments, and garrison routines.

Sir Henry Clinton was the son of Admiral George Clinton (c.1685-1761) and grandson of Sir Francis Fiennes Clinton, 6th Earl of Lincoln. His father was Governor General of Newfoundland, 1732-1741, and of New York, 1741-1751. Rather than follow his father into the navy, Sir Henry embarked on a military career.
