William Duncan was born on Oct. 14, 1778 in N.H., the son of John and Margaret Duncan. He married Ruth Gilmore (d. 1821) in 1805 and together they had four children. William served as a Justice of the Peace and as a captain in the 10th company, 32nd regiment of the State Militia in 1810. At various times, he was involved with a wool mill, lumbering, a mill dam, and farming. In 1825 William moved to Mich. with one of his sons, Delamore.
