The Girl Scouts were founded by Juliette Gordon Low on March 12, 1912 when Low organized the first Girl Guide troop meeting of 18 girls at her home in Savannah, Georgia. Girl Scouts of America was a youth organization founded in 1912 as a counterpart to Boy Scouts of America. Its purpose was to promote character and self-esteem in young women.
