Scrapbook of newspaper clippings collected by a Confederate war veteran re reunions, accounts about specific Civil War battles, life on the home front, biographical sketches of Confederate veterans and women, obituraries, dedications of Confederate monuments in many Southeastern states, including F.W. Ruckstull's monument in Columbia, S.C. Includes various personal accounts of the burning of Columbia, S.C., including an essay by Madame Sophie Sosnowski, former head of the School for Women (p. 120); and sheet music and 6 verses to song, Stonewall Jacksons Way (p. 162). Obituaries include undated notice re services for Rev. Charles Jaggers: A Southern Tribute to a Negro Preacher (p. 154) re funeral for a 93 year old African American minister, whose services attracted ca. 4000 people. Other clippings re Columbia's history include essay and image of "Columbia's first cotton mill" on Lakeview Road. The building originally manufactured yarn rope and was owned by Samuel Dent (d. 1879); in 1882 it was used as a cotton gin and grist mill (p. 177); also includes several articles about an early automobile tour across the United States [ca. 1923?] by Mrs. S.T. Carter and her daughters and Miss Nell Moore, all of Florence, S.C. (pp. 112 and 116) Clippings discuss President Woodrow Wilson and Wilson family ties to Columbia, S.C., a few items re the first World War, including Why We Are At War; and re the President's death: Body Will Not Lie in State at Capital as Mrs. Wilson Refuses Plea Made by Taft (p. 55).
