The collection consists of two items: page, headed with a quote from Isaiah, signed by Robert Hall, 23 Sept. 1827, with two poems, "The Parting of Christian Friends," 11 Dec. 1827, and "To the Rev'd. William Ellis and Mrs. Ellis, Missionaries of the South Seas," 3 Dec. 1827; also, brief note, 20 April 1831, requesting that the Royal Institution admit Mr. Shoberl to the lectures on poetry and poets.

The poet James Montgomery was born in Irvine, Ayrshire, on 4 November 1771. He was sent to the Moravian school (the Moravians are a religious community) at Fulneck, near Leeds, and while there began writing poetry. Work followed in a bakery and then in a store, and then to the offices of the Sheffield Register .
