Waldo Peirce correspondence with Francis Hyslop, 1956.

The collection consists of three letters exchanged between Waldo Peirce and Francis Hyslop, Chairman of Penn State's Art Advisory Committee, in Aug.-Sept. 1956, the first, from Peirce, asking about a painting he had sent to Penn State; the second, a carbon from Hyslop, acknowledging receipt of the painting, expressing delight at adding a Peirce to the collection, and thanking him, with a mention of Henry Varnum Poor's murals; the third, from Peirce, also mentioning Poor, and suggesting he might stop by to see the painting on his next trip across country.

Nationally recognized American artist Waldo Peirce (1884-1970) was known for illustrating envelopes. Peirce was a Harvard alumnus, having earned his Harvard AB 1908; the addressee, William Bingham (1889-1971) earned his Harvard AB 1916 and served as director of athletics at Harvard from 1926 to 1951.
