Records related to the history of the creation of the Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse and Training School, Baltimore, Maryland (BMD) comprise this series. These histories date from 1894-1972 and include a bound notebook, typewritten and handwritten histories, a typewritten timeline, historical sketches, printed history booklets, pamphlets, printed articles, anniversary programs, news articles, circular letters, invitations, souvenir booklets, and an illuminated book. Subject matter of these historical files includes the beginnings of deaconess community, daily life at motherhouse, and appeals for women to enter the diaconate. Many of the histories are unpublished first-person accounts or recollections written by pastors involved with the deaconess cause in Maryland or written by the deaconesses themselves. Several of the histories are accounts given as addresses or speeches. One record of note is a German-language pamphlet issued by a group of General Synod pastors located in New York to raise awareness and money with the goal of establishing the motherhouse in New York City. There is also an illuminated book prepared by Sister Georgia Bushman for the BMD's 50th anniversary.
