Entries written during a voyage on board the steamship China, under Capt. Macauley, from Liverpool to New York. He then traveled through New York state to Niagara Falls, Toronto, St. Lawrence River, Lake Champlain, New Hampshire, Boston, and returned to New York city. He sailed back to Liverpool on board the steamship Russia, under Capt. Lott. Entries include his visits with Henry W. Longfellow, Henry James, Charles Sumner, and Theophilus Parsons. The entries are very descriptive of both the landscape and the people he encounters and include a lengthy treatise on the value and character of the United States. Most of the entries include pencil drawings of scenes. Signature of Henry W. Longfellow on p. 12r.
