Vol. 1, 1830-1835, has written on the flyleaf "Number 3, Register of my secret thoughts". It contains personal observations, copies of letters, an auto-obituary (p. 19), and other entries concerning death, poetry, morals, friends, aging, and other topics. The letter to Botta is tipped in (front flyleaf) and concerns the giving of the notebooks to her. Vol. 2, undated, has written on the flyleaf "Number 5." In contains essays on physicians, lawyers, divinity, the immortality of the soul, and other subjects.

Anne Charlotte Lynch Botta (November 11, 1815 – March 23, 1891) was an American poet, writer, teacher and socialite whose home was the central gathering place of the literary elite of her era.
