The images are computer-generated scans created from the original collection at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Includes ten Point Barrow Expedition photographs and the remainder are from A.W. Greely's five inspection trips to Alaska, 1900-1905, during the construction of the Washington Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System (WAMCATS) by the Army Signal Corps. Most of the photographs were taken by Miles Bros.

The International Polar Expedition was sponsored by the U.S. Signal Corps and the Smithsonian Institution to establish a permanent station for meteorological, magnetic, tidal, and pendulum observation. Adolphus Washington Greely (b. March 27, 1844, Newburyport, Massachusetts-d. October 20, 1935, Washington, D.C.) served throughout the American Civil War and remained in the army at the war's close. In 1881 he was appointed to lead the United States International Polar Year Expedition, 1881-1884 to Ellesmere Island. He retired from the Army in 1908 and died in Washington in 1935. ...
