This collection consists of the manuscript and notes and research files for Wortman's graduate thesis on the history of the United Presbyterian Church in Iowa from 1858 to 1952. The materials (compiled in the 1950s?) cover the background and beginnings of the United Presbyterian Church; the formative years, pioneer ministers and early customs of the Iowa Synod; a history of the Iowa Synod; a history of the Iowa presbyteries; leading figures in the United Presbyterian Church in Iowa; Iowa Presbyterian missionaries; work of Presbyterian women in Iowa including the Tama Indian mission; the Presbyterian General Assembly in Iowa; and histories of local churches compiled from responses to inquiries sent by Wortman.
