Letters, clippings, invitations, programs, calling cards, menus, and other memorabilia of court life. The collection gives a good picture of German court life during the last three decades of the 19th century, concerning events of the reigns of the first three German emperors, the last of whom, H.M. Wilhelm II, was related toMary countess Waldersee by marriage. Much material concerning Mary Esther Lee, countess Waldersee, including letters from her mother, Ann D. Lee, and letters written to her cousin Mary Hoppin in New Haven, Conn. Typed transcripts of the letters are also included.

Mary Esther Lee was the daughter of a wealthy wholesale grocer of New York City. In 1864 she married Prince Frederick of Schleswig-Holstein. He died in 1865. In 1874 she married Count Alfred von Waldersee, who became Field Marshal of the German army. Mary von Waldersee was an influential figure in German royal circles, and active in charitable work.
