Manuscripts and typescripts of various works by Hillyer, including Riverhead, a novel published in 1932; My Heart for Hostage, a novel published in 1942; introduction to an edition of the poetry of John Donne and William Blake, published in 1941; chapters from an unfinished novel; and "A note to Granville Hicks," an unpublished poem replying to an attack on Hillyer by Hicks, published in the New Republic in 1937.

Robert Hillyer was born in East Orange and he taught English and rhetoric at Harvard for several decades. In 1934 he won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for "The Collected Verse of Robert Hillyer." Hicks was a literary critic, novelist and teacher (1901-1982). He graduated from Harvard University, studied for the ministry and joined the Communist Party in 1934. He was the literary editor of the New masses and applied Marxist criticism to American literature in his writings.
