Collection : of decorated manuscripts of German literary works, ca. 1948-1950.

Manuscripts of German-language literary works copied by Gertrude Frenzel-Koehler in a calligraphic hand and in inks of different colors, with embellished initials. The works represented include Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's plays Faust part I and Iphigenie auf Tauris, as well as his one-act play Die Geschwister, in their entirety, along with a selection of poems, and an essay by him; the poem Die blaue Blume by Gerhart Hauptmann; an excerpt from the novel Knulp by Hermann Hesse; and the fairy tale Die Wölfe by Ernst Wiechert. One item, the manuscript of Goethe's Iphigenie, includes a bookmark made by Frenzel-Koehler (laid in), with a dedication to Ernst Jockers, dated Hellerau, 5 July 1949.

Gertrude Frenzel-Koehler resided in the Hellerau district of Dresden, Germany. She was married to the architect and professor Arthur Frenzel (1899-1975), who was a co-director of the restoration of the Zwinger Palace in Dresden after the Second World War. Frenzel-Koehler produced the manuscripts in this collection for Ernst Jockers (1887-1963), professor of German at the University of Pennsylvania, with whom she corresponded at this time.
