The collection contains biographical information, correspondence, news clippings, photographs, and audiotapes. These materials were donated by Kenneth B. Thomson, much of them given to him by Robert B. Heer, a personal correspondent of John David Provoo. Most of the materials in the collection are related either to the Provoo family (John David and his parents and siblings) or to the trial. Biographical materials of the Provoo family include obituaries, news clippings, genealogical records, and digitally reproduced photographic prints.

John David Provoo (August 6, 1917–August 28, 2001) was United States Army staff sergeant and practicing Buddhist who was convicted of treason for his conduct as a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II. His conviction was later overturned and he became a Buddhist priest. As a Buddhist teacher, he went by the name "Nichijo Shaka."...
