The entries were probably written a little after the events described took place. The book opens with a summary of the highlights of the preceding 3 years and reflects the political ferment of the times by one who neither sympathized with James II nor welcomed the prospect of a Dutch sovereign. Under 20 October he writes, "Everybody being almost besotted with this notion" that it will be a merry invasion.
