One of the ten companies comprising Buffalo's first uniformed militia regiment, organized after the Patriot War of 1837, with James McKay as colonel, Dr. Ebenzer Johnson as lieutenant colonel, and George P. Barker as major. The Buffalo City Guard was officially part of the 37th Regiment of Artillery, New York State Militia. Regiment organized at Elmira, N.Y., 20 May 1861, from the 65th and 74th Militia. Men were recruited principally from Erie County. The regiment left the state on 18 June 1861, and saw service in Maryland and Virginia, including McDowell's advance on Richmond, Pope's Campaign, Bull Run, and Antietam.
