Robbins family papers 1786-1915.

Spanning several generations, the papers in this collection contain the probate papers of John Robbins (1716-1798) and his wife Mary Russell Robbins. John's son Frederick Robbins's (1756-1821) extant personal papers make up a fair percentage of the collection and contain his correspondence and personal papers, including a notebook he kept on breeding and planting cycles, indentures for his servants, personal promissory notes and public ones (they were written out to him when he was Treasurer of the Stepney Society), tax papers/receipts, his last will and testament, and subsequent probate papers. Frederick's wife, Mehitable Wolcott, is represented in the collection with the last will and testament of her father Elisha as well as for bills for household furnishings. The correspondence, deeds, and probate papers of Frederick Robbins Jr. (1784-1821) are in the collection as are the papers of Horace W. Robbins (1786-1821) which include an inventory of the goods which were on the ship in which he was traveling in when he died. The papers of Philemon Ames (ca. 1750-1797) contain indentures, deeds, and probate papers. Eunice Ames's (1786-1867) papers contain a "letter wrote by Jesus Christ" (a recounting of the story of creation of the Ten Commandments and the Angel Gabriel), deeds, correspondence, and papers regarding her estate. Franklin Robbins's (1792-1868) papers include bills, and a summons ordering him to pay money to the estate of Frederick Robbins. The papers of Ashbel Robbins (1790-1826) and his wife Elizabeth Ann Rutledge Robbins include personal correspondence to family members. The bulk of the remainder of the collection contains the papers of Philemon Frederick Robbins (1807-1890) and his son Philemon Wadsworth Robbins (1848- after 1920). The collection contains a short autobiography written by P.F. Robbins as well as his business papers, including notices of incorporation, deeds, and promissory notes. Philemon Wadsworth was given several rewards of merit for his school work and these are part of the collection). Also included are his invitations to social events, poems written by him, as well as personal and business correspondence. The family's venture into the purchase of land in now what is known as Old Saybrook (Conn.) is represented with several property deeds, a stock certificate for The New Saybrook Company, and two maps of New Saybrook (published by the Kellogg & Bulkeley Co.) which portray great development and expansion in the town. The collection is completed with the papers of Harriet Elizabeth [Cook] Robbins (b. 1857) which include genealogical research on her family as well as the papers of a cousin of the family named Clarinda Robbins.
