Rutledge Hargrove was born in the late 1860s to Frank and Elvira Hansen Hargrove. His parents migrated to Montana in the spring of 1880 and settled in the Toston area. At the age of seventeen Rutledge began working for Huntley and Clark who were owners of the Riverside Ranch near Radersberg. He eventually worked his way up to foreman of the ranching operations and retained that position until Silas Huntley's death in 1907.
