James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother. He was learned, taught by some of the best tutors available in the Scottish Humanist school, but also deeply superstitious, secretive and something of a misanthropist. Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567. Through her husband Francis II, King of France, she was also briefly queen consort of France (1559-1560).
