Karl Arnstein papers, 1897-1981.

The Karl Arnstein papers provide rich details on the design and construction of airships, notable the first rigid airships: the U.S.S. Akron and the U.S.S. Macon. The papers contain personal and professional correspondence, notes, speeches, and publications authored by Karl Arnstein. Also included in the papers are published works, news clippings, photographs, plan drawings, sound recordings, and memorabilia about Arnstein and his associates as well as the subject of engineering. Materials were created or collected by Arnstein and maintained in his personal files until their donation to Archival Services. The date span of the papers cover Arnstein's childhood in Prague in the early twentieth century to items collected by his widow following his death in Akron, Ohio in 1974.

Karl Arnstein (b. Mar. 24, 1887-d. Dec. 12, 1974, Akron, Ohio) was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Before coming the United States, Arnstein served as Director of Technical Science at the University of Prague; honorary Director of Engineering at the University of Aix La Chapelle in Aachen, Germany, and was Fellow, both at the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
