Meyer was born in 1918. Meyer studied at Columbia University, graduating with a B.A. in Philosophy and an M.A. in Music in 1948. He earned a Ph.D. in the History of Culture in 1954 at the University of Chicago. He was professor of music at the University of Chicago from 1946 to 1974 and professor of music and the humanities at the University of Pennsylvania beginning in 1975.
