Civil War veteran photograph, [between 1887-1896].

Cabinet card photograph of Joseph Harris Jr., a Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin resident who served as Captain of Company K, 36th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The photograph was taken sometime after the war and shows Harris wearing civilian clothing. Born in England, Harris immigrated to the United States in the 1850s and moved to Wisconsin sometime before the war. He worked in Sturgeon Bay as a clerk before being mustered iinto the 12th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in 1861. Harris was later transferred to Company K, 36th Wisconsin Infantry and eventually promoted to captain. He was discharged in 1864 because of wounds he received during the Siege of Petersburg. Following the war, Harris returned to Sturgeon Bay where he lived with his wife, Rosalie, and worked as a boat builder and a farmer. He was also an active member of the Wisconsin GAR. Harris died in 1916 and is buried in Sturgeon Bay. The photograph was taken by Charles H. Lown in Sturgeon Bay.
