The Anaconda claim was located in 1875. In 1881 Marcus Daly discovered the copper vein that began copper mining in Butte, Montana. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company was organized on June 18, 1895 in Butte and it dominated the early industrial history of Montana. Robert Carpenter received his B.A, M.A, and PhD in geology and mining from Stanford. He worked for the United States Geological Survey (1940-41) and the International Smelting and Refining Company (1944-46). He also worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company (1942-44) directing a large copper mine in Butte, Montana.
