This collection documents Carpenter's work largely with the Molybdenum Corporation of America, the New York Honduras Rosario Mining Company, and Union Carbide. Included in the collection are diagrams, notes, biographies, maps, and reports on mines throughout the world and minerals such as molybdenum, iron, nickel, and uranium. There are also papers, speeches, and publications by Carpenter dating 1954-1981, and slides of landscapes and minerals. Course material from Stanford and the Colorado School of Mines is also present.

The Anaconda claim was located in 1875. In 1881 Marcus Daly discovered the copper vein that began copper mining in Butte, Montana. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company was organized on June 18, 1895 in Butte and it dominated the early industrial history of Montana. Robert Carpenter received his B.A, M.A, and PhD in geology and mining from Stanford. He worked for the United States Geological Survey (1940-41) and the International Smelting and Refining Company (1944-46). He also worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company (1942-44) directing a large copper mine in Butte, Montana. Carpenter was a professor in the geology department at the Colorado School of Mines from 1947-1979. He worked in mines around the world for companies such as the New York Honduras...
