Documents the artistic achievements of Native American artists. Includes biographical information on over 23,000 (as of 2005 June 15) traditional to contemporary Native American artists, performers and writers. A Native American artist is defined as an artists who is of American Indian descent; Native Americans comprise the aboriginal peoples of the Western Hemisphere, including the indigenous Arctic peoples of Greenland, Canada, Alaska, and adjacent regions of Siberia, namely, the Inuit and Eskimo. Artists that are included are both living and deceased. Artists are defined broadly and include painters, sculptors, weavers, potters, kachina doll carvers, print makers, novelists, poets, film makers, actors, and musicians; artists represented in the collection work in a wide variety of media and genres. Collected materials include business cards, journal and newspaper articles, resumes, artists statements, photographs, exhibition announcments and catalogs, research notes, correspondence, and interviews; collected material dates from various time periods with the bulk dating from the 1950s to the present (ongoing). Each file includes a data and index sheet which provides basic biographical information, a list of the artist's exhibitions, awards and prizes, and citations to published resources about the artist.
