Philip G. Haddock was born in San Diego, California in 1913. He completed his B.S. in forestry (1934) and Ph.D. in plant physiology (1942) at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation, Haddock enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force where he served until 1945. He then assumed his first teaching position at the New York State College of Forestry.
