Sutherland-McManus family papers, 1868-1999.

The Sutherland-McManus Papers span the years 1868 to the 1990s and include items relevant to four main family members. There is also material related to their extended family. Each family member has their own series although the bulk of information can be found in the collection of W.A. Sutherland. The papers are arranged by series which include personal papers, New Mexico State University information, manuscripts, correspondence, scrap books, newspaper clippings, framed and unframed art, sheet music, autographed books, memorabilia, and a large collection of photographs and photo albums. There are also oversized boxes which include important photographs, and three-dimensional items. The papers are arranged chronologically by date and alphabetically by subject. Significant materials and authors of correspondence have been noted. Some items from the collection were dispersed and a list of these is included.

W.A. Sutherland was a graduate of New Mexico State University in 1898. June 25, 1902, he married Minnie Newberry, a 1901 graduate of NMSU. They had two children, William Alexander, Jr. born 1906 and Constance born 1912. Sutherland was a professor of Spanish and Latin at the college, and in 1902 he was sent to the Philippines as an assistant to William Howard Taft.
