Transcriptions of a small group of letters written to Joseph Willard Leland and his wife, Electa Harriet (Boynton) Leland by two of Joseph's brothers, Levi P. and Henry S. Leland, and by Electa's brother, Emerson A. Boynton. Levi P. Leland and Emerson A. Boynton served together in the Third Vermont Infantry Regiment. Their letters are fairly brief and are concerned mainly with their health and their stays in the hospital. Emerson frequently writes that he feels no fear or that there is little danger. The single letter from Henry S. Leland is more descriptive. The First Battery Light Artillery was stationed in New Orleans and Henry describes the crops and land. He also describes some of the looting.

The General Society of the Cincinnati was founded in May 1783 at the Verplank house, Fishkill, New York, by Continental Army officers who fought in the American Revolution. It was organized in fourteen constituent societies, one of which is the Massachusetts Society.
