Maurice Hewlett letters, 1900-1922.

The collections consists of 7 handwritten letters from Hewlett to various people, 1 postcard to G. Lansdale Deighton of the British Legion, and 1 note sending something with his compliments. The letters are dated between 12 Dec. 1900 and 21 Oct. 1922. Two are dated, but lack years. They are written to My dear Poole, Dear Tirard, Dear Horace, Mrs. Grieve, Dear Sir (two letters, one possibly being F. Dolman?), and Mr. Perris. The letters cover a variety of subjects including social and political affairs, medical qualifications, agreeing with Sir George Douglas' report, availability of a house near Glasgow, publishers, festivities, and the painter W.P. Frith.

Maurice Henry Hewlett was an English novelist and poet. He was born in Surrey and entered the family law practice in 1878, later called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1890. He gave up law to concentrate on writing after the success of his first novel, The forest lovers, in 1898. This was followed by other novels and later poems and essays.
