Samuel Gray commissary records, 1777-1782.

Primarily correspondence with Charles Steward, Commissary General of Issues for the Continental Army, with the Deputy Commissary General for Issues, Samuel Gray. The letters include a notice of Gray's appointment in 1777, reports of troop movements, the need to move stores to safety, reports about moving and distributing stores to the army, instructions from Congress and the Board of War, letters complaining of financial difficulties, and complaints about mail disruptions which caused delays in headquarters getting returns from the field. Assistant commissaries with whom Gray corresponded include Moses Church of Springfield, James Richardson of Boston, Daniel Brown of Fishkill, John Elderkin at Fort Arnold, Guy Richard of New London and Royal Flint. Also includes letters to Samuel from his brother Ebenezer.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. John Elderkin was a New Yorker and a founder of the Lotos Club in 1870, a private club for journalists, literary men, artists, and members of musical and dramatic professions in New York. The club entertained visiting celebrities such as Mark Twain, Henry M. Stanley, Jacques Offenbach, Wilkie Collins, and King Kalahaua, among others.
