1864 letter to Lossing requests that Lossing send him the war news as soon as possible ("we are all in great anxiety to hear from your expedition") and stresses the need for his newspaper The Public Ledger to have fuller and fresher war news. 1878 letter to Osgood discusses in detail thinking Osgood should charge for a book. 1890 letter to McClure discusses briefly having several short stories he would like to submit.

James R. Osgood was a native of Maine who went to work for the publishing house of Ticknor and Fields. He eventually founded the subsidiary group James R.
