A native of Australia, Patrick Squires was a charter member of the University of Nevada's Desert Research Institute and a pioneer in the study of cloud seeding. Born in 1914, Squires received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Melbourne in 1934 and a doctorate in 1959. He joined the Australian Bureau of Meteorology in 1937, and served as a Squadron Leader in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, working as a weather analyst.
